The Meaning of the Medal
One of the most beloved of all saints, St. Anthony is considered the Patron Saint of the Poor, of Priests and Travelers, of Sailors and Fisherman, and of the Mails. Born in 1135 in Lisbon, Portugal, he was a lifelong scholar of the church, and even became a Franciscan monk. St. Anthony is especially invoked for the recovery of items which have been misplaced ("Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony, please come around. Something is lost and cannot be found."). In paintings, St. Anthony is pictured wearing his monk's habit, holding the Christ child with one hand, and holding a lily in the other hand to symbolize purity.
