The Significance of the Medal

The Miraculous Medal (featured in the center of this medal) is one of the most beloved of all religious medals.  In 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to a French nun named Sister Catherin Laboure (now a Saint).  The Virgin Mary showed Sister Catherin her vision of this exact medal, which she directed to be struck and distributed.  The medal featured the Virgin Mary on the front with the inscription "Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for those who have recourse to thee."  The back of the medal was to include 12 stars, a large M surmounted by a cross, the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by a sword.

The Four Way Medal is traditionally a combination of four popular Catholic medals including the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, St. Christopher, and the Miraculous Medal.  The Queen of the Holy Scapular is included on the Four Way portion of this particular medal.

The Sacred Heart Medal was created commemorate St. Margaret Mary of France.  She was born an invalid in the mid 1600's, but the Blessed Virgin Mary cured her.  To thank God for this wonderful gift, she promised to give her life to His service.  At the age of 17, and after Jesus appeared to her, she entered into the Order of the Visitation to become a nun.  Jesus revealed His Sacred Heart to her in four visions.  The flames that come forth from His Heart remind us of His burning love for us and His desire that we love Him in return.  The crown of thorns around His Heart reminds us of his sacrifice to us to remove our sins. In addition, Jesus made 12 promises to St. Margaret Mary telling her how he would help those who honor His Sacred Heart.  St. Margaret Mary wrote, "He showed me that it was His great desire of being loved by men and of withdrawing them from Satan's path of ruin.  He promised me that wherever this image should be exposed and honored by men the He would pour forth His blessings".

The St. Christopher Medal was created to commemorate St. Christopher, the patron saint to protect travelers.  For people who honor St. Christopher's memory, he protects them from storms and other hardship that they may encounter.  The medal depicts St. Christopher safely delivering a child from a raging river.  St. Christopher was first recognized for his piety in the 5th century.

The Queen of the Holy Scapular is featured on the bottom of this cross, which symbolizes Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or The Virgin of Carmel.  This is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order of nuns within the Catholic Church.
